Chapter 2: Water in the Oceans
Chapter 2 Introduction
Chapter 2, Lesson 1: What Role Do Oceans Play in the Water Cycle?
Summary
The waters of the ocean provide fresh water for Earth through the water cycle. As water moves through this cycle, it changes from a liquid to a gas and back to a liquid through the processes of evaporation and condensation. The water returns to Earth as precipitation. Sodium chloride is the most common salt in the ocean. The salts and other substances dissolved in ocean water make it denser than fresh water. Chapter 2, Lesson 2: What Are the Motions of Oceans?
Summary
Ocean waves form as wind blows over the water's surface. Strong, gusty winds over a large area can cause a large wave called a storm surge. Tides are the rise and fall of ocean water caused by the pull of gravity between Earth, the moon, and the sun. Surface currents are caused by the blowing of steady winds. Deep ocean currents are caused by differences in saltiness or water temperature. |
